Doug Ebertowski has a unique story. He has a past that he doesn't hide from but it is a past that he isn't necessarily proud of.
"I remember taking a turn for the south for a number of years, drugs, alcohol, you know. The one thing I did have at that young age is that I was able to play guitar. That gained me some acceptance but that also pulled me into a lifestyle that I chose that was pretty bad. A lot of bars and playing in rock and roll bands," Doug said.
This former rock and roller was on a path of self destruction so dangerous that the thought of dying at a young age was part of his reality at the time.
"There were times that I was pretty close to overdosing," Doug remembers.
"Are you amazed that you're still alive?" Betsy asked.
"Oh, absolutely. And I even remember, because I knew the Lord, and I remember at times as a young guy when I went out for the night that I was going to do a bunch of sinful things that night and I would tell God, 'Don't let the world end tonight. Just let me get home and tell you I'm sorry'. I lived that way for a number of years and I turned my back on Him," Doug admits.
He knew the Lord, alright. As a little boy, his Grandmother played a vital role in his faith.
"I remember being probably five or six and telling my grandmother that I was going to be a preacher when I grow up, 'I'm going to be a preacher when I grow up, Grandma'," he recalls.
Little did Doug know at the time that that simple statement was not taken lightly by God.
"About 13 years ago God really began to go at my heart and He pulled me into a church. At that point He began to straighten out my life, my family, my relationship with my wife. And then began to remind me of the promise I made to Him as a small boy, 'Doug you said you're going to be a preacher when you grow up'," he concluded.
